What is a col?

A col is the lowest crossing of a ridge. The Col du Tourmalet, for instance, is the saddle between two peaks, not the summit of a mountain.

A col is not always a climb. Some cols are reached by a descent, others have almost imperceptible gradients. Their beauty lies in their convenience and the long histories attached to them. They are cherished (especially in France) by cyclists and walkers for whom the landscape is something more than a gigantic open-air gymnasium.

Because a col has a precise geographical definition, this catalogue is not a personal selection of climbs but a complete list of these remarkable natural features.
